Opening scene 'After Effects' - Settings/Locations
Settings/Locations
There will be 3 different settings in our opening scene:
- Inside college
- Thaomy's house
- A park
We have decided to use the college as one of the settings as the main character is a teenage freshman who's day to day life involves attending college. The main locations inside the college that we would use is the corridor and a classroom. The corridor will be the first college location of the clip, it is where the freshman over hears a conversation that he shouldn't had which leads to many problems and dramas. In result of ears dropping, he arrives late to his first lesson of the day therefore gets a detention, a classroom would be used to represent this.
As the character is a freshman, he will still be living at home with his parents. The main room we are going to use in Thaomy's house is her brothers room, as the freshman will be sleeping to showcase he is having a dream. There would be several shots of the surroundings and belongs around the room to portray the type of character he is to the viewers. The camera will focus on his facial expressions; once his eyes close the scene change into his dream. There would be a constant switch between each dream and reality to remind the audience he is dreaming, between each scene the freshman will gradually panic more and more, moving around quicker and quicker, heart beat getting faster and faster to symbolize that his dream is bad portraying his future will be terrible if he doesn't change. The opening will finish with the freshman suddenly waking up with a loud gasp covered with sweat, being a reminder and representing the freshman saw a horrid dream of his future.
We will use the park as the location where the freshman's friend calls him and asks for a favor. We decided to use this setting as it is a park that many people don't go, therefore is the perfect location for the friend to give the drugs to the freshman. The freshman would arrive early and will sit on the seats (left picture) wondering whats going on, after his friend arrives the walk around the park to the pathway (right picture). As his friend is in trouble and needs someone to keep the drugs, the freshman couldn't say no and agreed to keep it, knowing something bad will come out of it.
Genre and Convention
Genre and Convention
A teen film targets towards teenagers, normally focusing on teenage life. The concept teenagers orginated back in the 1950s, it started after the war ended. The concept became a marketing invention for society, using the 'teenagers' as a a re-development strategy, allowing to help with economic growth.
The conventional teen drama normally focuses on teenage life show a transitional changes in their lives. Changes such as first love, coming of age, friendship and family conflict. Depending on the plot of the movie, a teen movie would concentrate on a male lead or female lead. For example one of the first teen movie 'Rebel Without Cause' focuses on coming of age as the male lead begins to learn more about himself through his mistakes and choices he makes. We see that he experiences love but also family issues, showing a relateable story to the audience. But that has all changed as movies has focused on giving the teenagers a sterotypical view on being wild and irresponsable. Also the focus on teenage cliques has been a key feature in any teen movie where, within a school there would be a series cliques where depending on your popularity and what you do e.g cheerleader, jock, geek this would then determind what group you socialised in.
A movie dated back such as 'A walk to remeber' shows you what was the typical teenage movie was like back then. 'A walk to remember' shows you a deeper meaning, touching the heart of the audience.
Where as movie such as 'mean girls' show you what is protrayed now. 'Mean girls' has a moral behind it but can be lost within the movie due to some many other problems occuring in the movie. The use of the 'bitchy' vibe in the movie makes it more enterianing for modern teenagers to watch.
Risk Assessment - After Effects
As we will be filming in a outdoor environment it is essential that we make sure that we are aware of certain things that may affect our filming process. For the camera we'll make sure to keep it in within its case to protect it from getting damaged while filming outside. As well as making sure the camera is protected in it case we will also cautious of how to handle the camera, we'll make sure that whenever we have the camera within reach, we make sure it's handle tight and sturdy grip.
As well as making sure the camera is handle safely, we also have to make sure that we are well precautioned as well. We need to make sure that none of the members are in danger in anyway whilst filming. This means that we should avoid filming in places which could be dangerous for us but also if we have to take a risk with the location this then means that we will look out for one another, making sure that if any one of us needs help them we should all be able to help one another.

After effects | sound/music
Sound/Music to be used in opening
Finding copy right free music on soundcloud one of the various scources we used to find music we needed. This website is were i found the grime music to represent the main character.
In order to find the correct music and copy right free music we had to use the comulitive search engine in order to be sure that the music we were getting was legal, while making the opning scene we used arious rap/hip hop songs to represent the modern teenagerin that kind of situation.
Evidence of using using the creative comms serch engine in order to find he music we needed, had to highlight the 2 tick boxes under the "Enter your search quary" to be 100% sue all teresults found were able to be used for comercial uses and also to be legaly addapted and eddited.
Songs to be played in the background, the music which is used to represent the type of person he is, and also to show that he is a relatible character.
https://soundcloud.com/genostep/little-grime-mix-first-mix
This is more omminous music which can be used to represent the dream world so you can make a clear distinction when and when he is not dreaming.
Ths song is key because it is softer of the 2 songs that will play in the background.

This is a sound effect we will use for the door opening during his dream, this is a very scary creaking noise tat could be used to represent the climatic ending before the camer cuts off and disolves into the titles and idents.

After effects | Distribution and Production Company
Film4 is a British production company known for producing and co-producing films. We have chose to work with film4 because they tend to produce a lower budget or independent films. This meant that it would fit into our criteria as our film is very low budget as
and independent based on less technology that we provide them. Film4 produce a movie such as Slumdog Millionaire and Trance that aim for a niche audience. We also aim for a niche audience as well so this meant that Film4 would be appropriate for us. Film4 also has their own Digital TV channel, airing movies. They tend to air film which they have produced and co-produce which means that later on when our film has been develop and play in box offices it can be also aired on their channel.
For our distribution company we've chosen to team up with Studio Canal, as the company which would distribute our movie. Studio Canal is a French based distribution and production company, known for focusing on French and European productions. British movie such as Johnny English and Love Actually all have been part of Studio Canal work. This then fits in with our movie as we're a low budget movie wanting to capture the British audience firstly. They also have strong link with Universal Studio which also act as a advantage to us as if our movie gets good review we could then advance to a international audience through the connection that Studio Canal has with Universal Studios.

'After Effect's' title edits
'
'After Effects' | sub genre's
Type of teen film:
During the planning of our opening scene, we listed down the possible genres that we might like to do, which were the following:
- Comedy
- Horror
- Action
- Crime
- Drama
- Fantasy
We explored the varies sub-genres and narrowed it down to the genres we thought would be different from other groups, had the best story-line to and enable us to touch on subjects of everyday teens life that our target audience can relate and connect to, the genres we picked are:
- Fantasy
- Drama
- Crime
Film inspirations:
We were inspired by a couple of films/TV series for different aspects of our opening scene:
- Top Boy
- Premonition
Premonition
This film inspired us to base the story-line of the freshman seeing how his future will turn out if he doesn't change his actions, friends and behavior through his dreams. We decided to do this as it was something we all found interesting and exciting about however also challenging if we don't caption and portray the character is seeing his future in opening scene correctly but also like a challenge. Also we thought it will be different from other groups and appeal to the audience.
Top Boy
As our target audience is teenagers (13- 19 years old) we wanted to do a theme that teens are interested in so we decided to base it on drugs. Top Boy inspired us, when it came out it was a huge success therefore returning this year. The freshman becomes dragged into drugs by doing a favor for his friend. He then becomes addicted to it which causes many health problems, who is lucky to see this in his dreams and as if he has a second chance to change his life.
After Effects | Opening and Outline Final ideas
After Effects
The plot for After Effects follows a life of a teenage boy, showing the audience how one night while sleeping he dreamt what his life in the future would be like. In the movie we see how he overcomes struggles and troubles to find ways to change his life.
The opening begins with a small introduction of his life with the use of mise en scene, using his objects and belongings in his room to showcase his character. The camera focuses on his facial expression showing the audience that he's dreaming. The scene changes into his dreams where we follow his footsteps walking through a corridor. He over hears conversation going around, about drugs in the school, the scene then flashbacks to him while sleeping, so it acts as a reminder for the audience to know that he is still dreaming. This then revert backs to his dream where this time he's outside the school with his friend. His friend then gives him drug, telling him to look after them as a favour. He agrees which means he has to then look after them.
Somehow he get into trouble causing him to have detention, so later on that day his dream moves onto the detention scene. As he detention comes to a end but before he leaves, his teacher has to sign a detention slip. He takes it from his bag which leads him drop the bag of drugs. This then catches his teacher's attention causing him to get caught and then get into trouble. He lies to the teacher saying something else, luckily for him the teacher believes him. As the afternoon progresses, he finds himself curious of what effect the drugs would have on him. This lead him to try the drugs. once trying he begins to find himself becoming addicted. The addiction carries on and it begins to take over his life.
His dream turns into a nightmare as he sees his life turning into a disaster. He begins to see that his addictions clings onto his a portions of his life, and there's a point where he sees himself at its peaks; helpless and clueless. The dream then dramatically stops, leaving him to wake up in distress, he realises what he's just dreamt. The comprehended that the dream was his future and he now has to change his future so it doesn't turn out the way he's dreamt. So the journey begins where we as the audience see his nightmare comes to life but also the changes he makes to change his life

Opening Scene: 4 Track Ideas
After doing research and getting some knowledge, ideas and thoughts I cracked on with the hunt on music, theses are the following I found and liked:
I can see this soundtrack being played in the background of the conversation scene, building up tension and suspense to the audience of what is going to come on next. As the music is upbeat give hints to the audience that its going to be climax scene.
This music could work with the park scene, the journey of Joshua meeting up with his friend then building up to the climax once he was the drugs and walks off. This soundtrack can portray that since he done this favour his life isn't going to be the same and is doing to be hectic linking with the climax parts.
I think this music will suite the opening scene as it is a mixture of both soft, slow beats with dubstep above it. This can be used in the beginning of the opening scene (bedroom scene) as it'll complement the movement or can be used in the detention scene as the dubstep section will suite the part when Joshua takes drugs having a contrast to the soft section can symbolize what Joshua is doing isn't himself and is bad, hinting out something negative is going to happen.

This soundtrack is perfect for the scene where Joshua becomes addicted to drugs, the dubstep beat that becomes faster and builds up to a climax will suite the action which I can see it working really well together.

Comparison Between Original and Remake
Comparison Between Original and Remake
Our goal for this assignment was to re-create a shot by shot opening scene for the movie 'The Breakfast Club'. We tried to make our opening as similar to the original opening but due to the fact that we didn't have the exact equipment, this lead us to situations where we weren't able to acheive the same shots.
In the beginning of the opening for 'TBC' (The Breakfast Club), the first shot is a wide shot showing the outside buliding school, for our opening because we had the advantage of filming in college we were able to film the outside building of the school. This allowed us to then create a similar shot like the original.
For the music, we used the original song that was used in the opening for 'TBC' - 'Don't You (forget about me) by Simple Minds . We were able to get the song through youtube, and from that we used a online converter - Qiuck Grab, which converted the music from the video into a mp3 format. As well as the music, the original opening had a voice over that last 1:07 seconds. We was able to get the script for that section from the internet which then allowed us to record the exact words for the voice over. We used our male member to make it even more similar to the original as the original voice over had a male character speaking in the voice over.
As the opening develops, there are series of shots showing different elements of the school surroundings and equipment, e.g clock, lockers, corridor, canteen and disply boards. As we film in a school enviroment we were also able to capture these features for our opening. This allowed us to make our opening as similar to the original.
The next shots are different as they they allow us to see the types of characters that will be in the opening. The original opening was more complicated for us to replicate as they had the use of cars and elder actors which we didn't have. As we weren't able to drive any cars we had to find a different solution. So what we did was we used cars outside which were parked up allowing it to act as if the cars were parked up against the school just like the original. Just like
'TBC' each car was a representation of what each character would be like in the movie, e.g the 'BMW' tells us that the character would be wealthy, and so we tried to find cars which showcased the each characters personalities.
The scene begins to be more complicated as the setting in the original scenes moves from outside to inside the car. As we weren't able to film inside of a car, we had to find a small similar area that was like a inside of a car. We was able to find a small room and with the re-arrangement of chairs and tables we tried to make the setting as comparable to the actual opening. We also didn't have enough people to play all the different characters which meant that we had to play more than one characters. With the use to the props this allowed us to make the characters more distinctive and recognisable. As well as the props the dialogue that was used in the original we also used in our scene. We again found the script for the dialogue on the internet, which we then rehearsed used into our scene to replicate the scenes.
Not everything about our opening was the same the original as there were things that we didn't have or couldn't have, e.g inside scene of the cars or older actors too as a parents. But we tried to make it as similar as possible. There were times when it was really hard due to the lack of resources, but as this assignment involved a school environment this worked as a advantage for us as we had a school environment to film.
