Comparison Between Original and Remake

Comparison Between Original and Remake

Our goal for this assignment was to re-create a shot by shot opening scene for the movie 'The Breakfast Club'. We tried to make our opening as similar to the original opening but due to the fact that we didn't have the exact equipment, this lead us to situations where we weren't able to acheive the same shots.

In the beginning of the opening for 'TBC' (The Breakfast Club), the first shot is a wide shot showing the outside buliding school, for our opening because we had the advantage of filming in college we were able to film the outside building of the school. This allowed us to then create a similar shot like the original.

For the music, we used the original song that was used in the opening for 'TBC' - 'Don't You (forget about me) by Simple Minds . We were able to get the song through youtube, and from that we used a online converter - Qiuck Grab, which converted the music from the video into a mp3  format. As well as the music, the original opening had a voice over that last 1:07 seconds. We was able to get the script for that section from the internet which then allowed us to record the exact words for the voice over. We used our male member to make it even more similar to the original as the original voice over had a male character speaking in the voice over.

As the opening develops, there are series of shots showing different elements of the school surroundings and equipment, e.g clock, lockers, corridor, canteen and disply boards. As we film in a school enviroment we were also able to capture these features for our opening. This allowed us to make our opening as similar to the original.

The next shots are different as they they allow us to see the types of characters that will be in the opening. The original opening was more complicated for us to replicate as they had the use of cars and elder actors which we didn't have. As we weren't able to drive any cars we had to find a different solution. So what we did was we used cars outside which were parked up allowing it to act as if the cars were parked up against the school just like the original. Just like
'TBC' each car was a representation of what each character would be like in the movie, e.g the 'BMW' tells us that the character would be wealthy, and so we tried to find cars which showcased the each characters personalities.

The scene begins to be more complicated as the setting in the original scenes moves from outside to inside the car. As we weren't able to film inside of a car, we had to find a small similar area that was like a inside of a car. We was able to find a small room and with the re-arrangement of chairs and tables we tried to make the setting as comparable to the actual opening. We also didn't have enough people to play all the different characters which meant that we had to play more than one characters. With the use to the props this allowed us to make the characters more distinctive and recognisable. As well as the props the dialogue that was used in the original we also used in our scene. We again found the script for the dialogue on the internet, which we then rehearsed used into our scene to replicate the scenes.

Not everything about our opening was the same the original as there were things that we didn't have or couldn't have, e.g inside scene of the cars or older actors too as a parents. But we tried to make it as similar as possible. There were times when it was really hard due to the lack of resources, but as this assignment involved a school environment this worked as a advantage for us as we had a school environment to film.
